Why Bandari want to represent Kenya in Confederation Cup
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Cup holders Bandari claim they deserve to be prematurely declared the 2020 champions of the knockout competition on a certain technicality touching on Covid-19.
The dockers said they have the prerogative to be the country’s representatives’ in the CAF Confederation Cup with the ball now being thrown in the court of Football Kenya Federation (FKF).
Bandari’s proclamation comes in the wake of FKF failure to submit a name of Kenya’s emissaries in the continental Cup due to the pandemic that has rocked the entire world.
Bandari Technical Director Twahir Muhiddin said the virus was beyond the control of the world and argued that it was only tenable that the team is given another chance to carry Kenya’s flag in the Africa inter-clubs competition Cup.
“The current situation afflicting the world is understandable even to CAF and Fifa and as long as the virus remains, the status quo in regards to Kenya’s case should remain,” said Muhiddin at the weekend.
He added: “We are the defending champions of the FKF Cup and as such, FKF should take the bold step of coronating us champions instead of having the country miss out of the Confederation Cup,” said Muhiddin.
As Bandari were making the clarion call, several, quarters had earlier been vouching for either the dockers or last edition’s FKF Cup finalists Kakamega Homeboyz to be given a bite of the cherry in the Confederation Cup.
However, the verification of Homeboyz to make a maiden appearance in an Africa event might appear completed in that they were among five Kenyan Premier League teams which gave the FKF Cup, whose winner represents Kenya in the CAF Cup, a wide berth.
FKF Chief Executive Officer Barry Otieno had early this month hinted that the federation could be forced to forfeit the Confederation Cup slot for next season if there are no modalities on how the Cup will be finished.
“We do not want short cuts and if we cannot manage to play the remaining matches of FKF Cup from the quarter finals, then submitting such name would not be justifiable,” said Otieno.
