Berlin, Sunday

The 2020 Champions League final did not only decide Europe’s best football team but also this season’s best performer.

Pundits are convinced the 2020 Champions League winning side will contain this season’s best player.

The usual Ballon d’Or competition, regularly run by French sports-paper L’ Equipe has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, the world football governing body Fifawill most likely be bringing his award back to life.

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge reported after a chat with FIFA president Gianni Infantino that” Infantino told me that the award should be given to the best player, the best goalkeeper and the best coach. That is very welcome.”

When Paris St Germain and Bayern Munich crossed swords last Sunday evening, the two most promising candidates, Neymar Junior and Robert Lewandowski, seemed to battle it out over the equivalent of the Ballon d’Or in direct combat.

Besides Bayern coach Hansi Flick’s chances to grab the coaching award, “The Best” campaign might not be of the same level in the eyes of some traditionalists.

The awarded performers, though, won’t complain. Both versions of the Ballon d’Or over the recent years appeared like a personal retinue for Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

From 2008 on, one of the two was announced as the world’s best only interrupted by Luka Modric in 2018.

In 2020 Ronaldo’s Juventus was checked out in the last-16 round while Messi’s Barcelona was thrashed 8-2 by Bayern in the quarterfinals.

Champions League-winning performers can always count on a major advantage in individual awards.

Therefore, only two players stay in the race. Neymar versus Lewandowski is a duel of extravagance against efficiency.32-year-old Lewandowski seems the big favorite as long as Bayern secures Sunday’s contest.

The Bayern striker has been miles ahead of his competitors regarding goal figures and is surely nailed to be crowned the best this season.

He has scored a staggering 54 goals in 45 appearances (plus 10 assists), establishing himself as the most successful scorer in the Bundesliga, the German Cup, and the Champions League.

With 15 goals is on his way to breaking Ronaldo’s 2013/2014 Champions League record, football’s world seems to be his oyster this season.

Neymar has impressed after changing from a lone-wolf performer to a team player.

On top of this, the Brazilian star has not only won several domestic trophies but boasts a record of 19 goals in 26 appearances despite significant injury breaks.

Over the last years, both players have wondered if they could get into a promising position like today.

Both said they want to win the Champions League above all else, but seem fully aware they could well break all boundaries this Sunday.

As there seems little difference between the two final participants in terms of overall quality, it could be the two that will be the deciding factors.1.7 per game.   - XINHUA
