UASU suspends nationwide strike set for today

Monday, August 30th, 2021 09:22 |

The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) has suspended the national strike that was to begin today, Monday August 30.

In a statement, UASU Secretary General Constantine Wasonga said the union suspended the strike to allow room for dialogue with the government.

The strike, that was announced in August 23, was to take place countrywide, affecting learning in 35 public universities.

"Uasu national executive committee has directed that the union suspends its strike notice to give a final chance to dialogue," Wasonga said.

Wasonga said the decision to suspend the strike was reached after a meeting between the union officials and Principal Secretary for University Education and Research Simon Nabukwesi on Sunday.

The dons were to boycott work over the stalled implementation of the 2017-2021 collective bargaining agreement (CBA).
