Countries and private sector players have jointly pledged Sh900 billion in support of improved sexual reproductive health services. As the International Conference on Population and Development ICPD 25 came to a close yesterday, countries including Denmark, Finland, France and the European Commission committed Sh100 billion towards ending maternal deaths, unmet need for family planning and gender violence and harmful practices. Private sector organisations including The Ford Foundation and World Vision made a combined pledge of Sh800 billion. Denmark’s Special Envoy Ambassador Ib Petersen, said the investments would go towards accelerating the progress made in advancing gender equality and achieving sexual reproductive health rights for all in line with the ICPD plan of action made in Cairo 25 years ago. “There will be no ICPD50. Women and girls around the world have waited long enough to have rights and choices. Looking towards 2030, we now enter a decade of delivery during which we will walk the talk and hold all of us to account for the commitments we made in Nairobi,” he said.
