Cocaine valued at Sh598 million was yesterday destroyed at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters under the supervision of High Court judge Luka Kimaru. The cocaine, weighing about 100 kilogrammes, was confiscated on July 26, 2016 at Kilindini Port while being smuggled into the country. Two suspects, a Kenyan and a Briton, were arrested but the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) withdrew the charges on March 14, this year. DCI’s Anti-Narcotics Unit had requested the court to give an order for destruction of the drugs and on October 1, the court gave an order on the same. The exercise was also witnessed by Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, DPP Noordin Haji, Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai, DCI boss George Kinoti and analysts from the Government Chemist. Matiang’i said his ministry was ready to work with the Judiciary, the DPP and other stakeholders in dealing with the drug menace. The CS added that they had intelligence on the drugs cartel in the country and those who have been protecting them. “If you enjoyed protection from government officials, that has to stop. I know that it is dangerous for us and that is why we will put enough resources,” he said.
