Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko at Milimani Law Courts

The Anti-terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) on Thursday, March 4, produced former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko at Milimani Law Courts.

Sonko was produced in court on Thursday following orders by the Anti-Corruption court on Wednesday, March 3.

The court ordered Nairobi Hospital chief executive officer to produce Sonko from the hospital where he has been recuperating.

At Milimani, the Anti-Corruption Court Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti allowed the Director of Public Prosecutions to adduce new evidence in the Sh10 million graft case against the former governor.

Ogoti declined to recuse himself from the case, saying that Sonko has not proved claims of bias against him.

The court also ordered Sonko to be ready for the next hearing of his case on March 15.

The magistrate ruled that he will not allow any further adjournments for lack of sufficient instructions to Sonko's advocates.

Ogoti told Sonko that the case must proceed without delay whether his defense will be ready or not.

After the ruling, drama ensued in court as defense lawyers and prosecution exchanged words.

Ogoti stormed out of the court, saying that the proceedings had become disorderly.

Ogoti, however, said: "The proceedings have become unruly since the court has rendered its decision and at this rate we shall end nowhere. Any party that is dissatisfied should follow the normal process as provided for in the law."

The magistrate stormed out of the court after the remarks.

Sonko's Sh14.1 million graft case

In Sonko's other corruption case, before trial magistrate Peter Ooko, his legal team led by John Khaminwa said the former governor is unfit to follow proceedings as he is mentally unfit based on a new medical assessment by a consultant mental psychiatrist.

The defense urged the court to adjourn the case until Sonko is mentally fit to continue with the proceedings.
