Senate team kicks off two-day marathon hearing on Governor Mahamud’s impeachment motion
An 11-member Senate special committee will on Wednesday begin the process of hearing impeachment motion against embattled Wajir Governor Mohammed Abdi Mahamud.
The committee chaired by Nyamira Senator Okong’o Omogeni has structured the hearing to accord both the governor and his accusers a day each to argue out their cases.
During the two-day marathon hearing, Wajir County Assembly and their witnesses will be given three hours on Wednesday morning to present evidence and justify the impeachment.
In the afternoon, the governor through his lawyers will be given time to cross examine the assembly and its witnesses.
On Thursday, the committee will allow the governor to make his response to the charges as drafted by the county assembly, the evidence as tendered to the House and launch defence against the allegations. The assembly will afterwards be accorded time for the rebuttal.
Addressing a press conference at Parliament Buildings on Monday, Senator Omogeni said that notices to appear before the committee were served last week to both the County Assembly speaker Ibrahim Yakub and the governor’s team
“We expect the governor and the speaker to file their documents to the office of the clerk by closes of business tomorrow (Tuesday) at 5PM,” the senator said as he released a programme of activities to the media.
He went on: “They should indicate whether they want to appear personally or through their advocates or both,”
“We have also requested that they give names of witnesses in support of the case by the assembly, they should not be more than three for each party,” he added.
According to him, the names and witness statement should be filed at the office of the clerk also by close of business Tuesday.
Orengo, who is also a senior counsel, disclosed that the committee will retreat from Friday to Sunday to analyse the evidence presented and write a report which will be presented to the House on May 17th.
“In that regard, we are liaising with the office of the speaker to ensure that we have a special sitting on Monday May 17th, 2021 at 2:30PM,” he said.
