Taita Taveta Governor Granton Samboja, has announced a partnership between his administration and Qwetu Sacco, which will see youth and women-in the small and micro- enterprise ventures in the county benefit from Sh240 million worth of loans.

Addressing a youth summit at Taita Taveta University over the weekend, Samboja hinted that the county will hire a financial consultant, to advise beneficiaries of the loans on how to gainfully start, expand and sustain businesses out of the loans.

“We want our people to do serious business and shun the culture of relying on handouts from politicians.

This time round, we want to go big on business and help our economy grow,” Samboja said.

Qwetu Sacco Chief executive Officer Charles Kaba said the Sacco,  seeks to give out loans worth Sh20 million every month and urged youth and women not to shy away from applying for the loans.

“We have started supporting some of the youths who came first and I can assure you that already they are doing well,”he said.

Samboja used the forum to advise locals to inculcate the culture of doing business, however small, instead of relying largely on employment that mostly come with poor wages.

He said  business or self-employment is the only sure way out of poverty.
