Ongoro, husband face fresh charges over Sh49 million fraud.

Former Kasarani MP Elizabeth Ongoro and her husband Ferdinand Masha Kenga and other persons have been charged afresh over the embezzlement of Sh49 million from the  constituency’s kitty.

Ongoro and others denied swindling funds meant for a school project.

They were charged afresh after Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji amended the charge sheet by dropping nine suspects among them a diplomat Ruth Kanini Kitonyi who is also a former Kasarani District development officer.

Earlier, trial magistrate Lawrence Mugambi had cautioned the prosecution against delaying the case.

He had expressed concern that the pre-trial of the case had never taken off despite being listed severally.

Kitonyi has since been turned into a State witness in the case against the former MP.

Mugambi had ordered the office of the DPP to make the necessary amendments to pave way for the pre-trial exercise where the parties will state whether they have received all the evidence or not.

Construction of school

The accused have denied embezzling funds meant for the construction of Kasarani Girls High School.

The project was allegedly conceptualised by the area Constituency Development Committee (CDF  Sh48,907,826 allocated to it and paid out but to date, the school does not exist.

In addition to the alleged embezzlement, the suspects are accused of failing to follow procurement laws.

Ongoro was the patron of the Kasarani National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) committee when she was the MP from 2007 to 2013.

Others indicted are former CDF committee members Silvan Onyango, Pamela Mudha, and Claperton Ouda, businessmen Maricus Otieno, Peter Aming, Maurice Orongo, William Ogutu Weda, James Juma Ochieng, Peter Ongeyo and Charles Owino.
