Needy students to benefit from SHOFCO scholarship donation
Needy students from three slum areas of Mombasa have a reason to smile after Shining Hope For Communities (SHOFCO) through its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Kennedy Odede donated a cheque worth Sh1.2 million to sponsor their high school education.
The students, drawn from Maweni, Mishomoroni and Bangladesh slums in Mombasa, could not hide their joy as they received the funds from SHOFCO CEO.
“I was accompanied by SHOFCO leadership team to SHOFCO in Bangladesh slum in Mombasa. We donated Sh400,000 to send the students to high schools. Next stop is Maweni and Mishomoroni,” Odede said after his first stop over at Bangladesh slum on Thursday, January 16.
SHOFCO, which has its headquarters at Kibera slums in Nairobi and New York City in United States, was founded in 2004 by Kennedy Odede.
It has two schools in Nairobi at Mathare and Kibera slums with a student population of over 600.
“As SHOFCO, we believe in education. Educated community, is an empowered society. We can only empower the next generation by giving them good education. We want them to come and change this Maweni for the better,” Odede said while donating a cheque of SH400, 000 to sponsor needy students joining high school at Maweni slums in Mombasa.
Odede said the donation is part of SHOFCO’s agenda to empower communities through education.
“We are having great experience with SHOFCO leaders in Mombasa. We donated another Sh400,000 to students from Mishoroni for their high school. Thank you Mishoroni,” he posted on his Facebook page.
SHOFCO has 10 centres in Kenya; Nairobi (5), Mombasa (3) and Kisumu (2).
Apart from education, the organization also offers clean water, healthcare and empowerment programmes through its Shofco Urban Network (SUN).
SUN seeks to build a strong urban network with the vision of giving the urban poor the voice.
SUN services include job readiness training, vocational training, job placements and partnerships, micro-business development, group savings and loans, IT training and digital literacy.
