Gor Mahia captain Kenneth Muguna is hopeful the club will sail through in the forthcoming two legs of the CAF Champions League preliminaries against APR of Rwanda.

Speaking to People Sport yesterday, Muguna said it will be tough. “No match is easy in this competition so we will have to fight and show character. We obviously want to go higher and build on last year’s performances to raise our confidence levels at that stage,” he said.

Gor Mahia have failed to go past the preliminaries in four previous attempts, but have managed to reach the group stage of the second tier CAF Confederation Cup on two occasions with 2019 being their best  run after reaching the quarterfinals.

Gor, like APR, did not  make a mark in the two tournaments last season, all dropping out before the monied stages.

This year Kenya will not have a representative in the CAF Confederations Cup due to coronavirus challenges.

Gor Mahia have battled APR Rwanda a couple of times in the recent past especially in Cecafa Competitions.

In the off-season, K’Ogalo signed the highly rated striker Jules Ulimwengu from APR opponents Rayon Sports, ex-Gor attacker Jacques Tuyisenge moved this season from Angolan side Petro Atletico to the Army side.

Tuyisenge played for Gor Mahia for three and half years and left the club as their all-time foreign scorer with 63 goals.

As for the 21-year-old Ulimwengu who is a Burundian international,he will be especially hungry to go head on against his former foes.

The fixtures will see the Kenyan side travel to Rwanda for the first leg on November 28. Gor have had a busy transfer window having signed 17 players.

Meanwhile Tanzania giants Simba SC home of Kenyan internationals Joash Onyango and Francis Kahata have been drawn against Nigeria’s Plateau United while Nkana FC will face off with Lesotho’s Bantu FC.Nkana houses Kenyans Harun Shakava and Duke Abuya.

The draw  for the Champion League and the Confederation Cup was held at CAF headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, on Monday evening.
