The Ministry of Tourism has warned tourists against falling prey to fraudsters purporting to be running tour firms. Kenya Walking Survivors Safaris Limited, which claims to be a tour company, has been singled out for allegedly defrauding tens of foreign tourists. Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife’s head of communications Mulei Muia said the company is being investigated to uncover the people behind it. The ministry said the company is not recognised by the Tourism Regulatory Authority (TRA) and Kenya Association of Tour Operators (Kato). “Initial findings indicate that these rogue individuals are not licensed tour operators regulated by both TRA or the Kenya Association of Tour Operators, but are also not registered companies under the Registrar of Companies,” the ministry said in the statement. A 51-year-old Chinese tourist, Chen Dong Yuan, and five friends are the latest victims who claim to have lost millions of shillings to the cons. Yesterday, Muia said the matter had been picked up by TRA, which, together with the Tourism Police Unit, are investigating the incidents. “We have enlisted the assistance of other law enforcement agencies, particularly the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, with the aim of apprehending these criminals and bringing them to book,” he said.
