Mikaela Mwangura.

Mikaela Mwangura is a fashion stylist and blogger with a bias on lifestyle, fashion and relationships. She is also the co-founder and CEO of the Eminence Global, a public relations firm. She chats with BARRY SILAH on her style preferences

What style do you subscribe to and why?

I subscribe to a sophisticated-sassy fashion style. It’s because the style depicts my character; which is bold, lively, cheeky and yeah, sophisticated!

What are the trends currently rocking and why do you think that’s so?

Floral and 60s wallpaper prints, because they bring major colour, pattern and life to all the top collections.

Another one is Spring Leather styles; whether it’s full leather or it makes just a part of the cloth, the material never runs out of style.

It was actually spotted in 2020 spring runways in every form—from vintage jackets to colourful leather skirts at Marni & Alexander McQueen.

Also the Polka dots. These rarely run out of trends; they are actually making waves in the spring 2020 runways all over the world.

Leopard prints is one of the animal prints wears that has crossed over to 2020, especially the ones that are styled with bits of leather or denim material, they look really chic.

They are absolutely taking over the fashion world currently from shoes, to dresses, jackets and pants.

How about among the celebrities?

Spring Silk Wrap Dresses is a segment that is becoming a trend among the celebrities. It comes with different styles of sleeves from puffed sleeves to bishop sleeves and showstopper sleeves.

It becomes sexier because of the silk material that flows with the body revealing every curve.

What’s the best style advice you’ve ever received?

‘Style is a deeply personal expression of who you are, and every time you dress, you are asserting a part of yourself’ by Nina Garcia. I try to express myself through my personal style and she nailed it!

Between shoes and bags, what is your weakness?

Shoes! I never seem to have enough; I keep buying them and they fill up my spaces, but I hardly complain. I feel that apart from complementing my different styles, they somewhat define me.

Is there that one style every woman should try at least once in her life?

Yes, the sophisticated style. It’s only known to be popular among the filthy rich, but I am certain that every woman should have that piece of cloth or a full outfit that they have heavily invested in guilty pleasure. And that’s what my e-shop ‘mskaelacloset.com’ is all about.

What is your view on spend versus value in fashion today?

I will quote the words of Vivienne Westwood, “Buy less, choose well and make it last”. Cheap is expensive, they just don’t last for a long time because of the poor quality.

Your favourite fashion quote and how does it inspire you?

“Style is a way of saying who you are without having to speak.” Style is an art and as such, I express myself through it.

What fashion read has the biggest impact in your image?

The Truth About Style by Stacy London. Style develops self-confidence thus the saying ‘Look Good Feel Good’. It has really helped me build my self-confidence.

What is the one thing you wished you knew about your looks when you were younger?

I wish I knew how to experiment more on different pieces and also how to dress my body. That would have helped a great deal I think, especially in finding the right fit.
