Police in Nyeri are holding a Matatu driver who allegedly attempted to rape a schoolgirl.

The 52-year-old Washington Nderitu who is a driver with 2NK Sacco attempted to rape the 21-year-old girl who has just completed her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam on Monday but got frustrated on her way home due to the lockdown, police say.

According to a report from Nyeri Police Station, the girl, a student at Githunduti Mixed Day Secondary School in Mathira, Nyeri county completed her exam on Monday, April 19, and embarked on journey home.

She boarded a Matatu to Nairobi on the same day intending to travel to Homa Bay county on Wednesday but her journey was cut short at Kenol where police have mounted a roadblock.

Unable to proceed to Nairobi, the diverted back to Nyeri but arrived late. Police say the driver drove the girl around in Nyeri town in an attempt to confuse her. She was the only passenger remaining in the matatu.

Instead of boarding her into a Nakuru bound matatu, the driver advised the girl to spend the night in Nyeri town and later took her to his house where he intended to commit the felony.

The girl told the police that she managed to escape and dial emergency numbers. The Police set a trap for the suspect who was then arrested.
