Mariga beats large field to lift Kenya Pipeline golf trophy in Mombasa
Mary Mariga braved acute Mombasa weather conditions to emerge winner of the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) sponsored Golf tournament at Mombasa Golf Club course on Saturday.
Mariga floored the large field of challengers to post 43 points while Paul Kinyanjui of Mombasa Club won the men’s category after carding 40 points. Japhet Obonyo also from Mombasa Club clinched the runners-up position.
Allan Aballa was third in the men’s category on 38 countback ahead of Paul Munyao also from Mombasa who also garnered 38 points in the event that attracted hundreds of spectators.
Christine Kinyeru emerged the best lady after recording 40 points ahead of Joyce Masai who settled in the runners-up position with 36 points.
Moses Mwangera was the best guest golfer clinching 34 points while Duncan Ndegwa was the best senior after clinching 37 points in the competition.
Best junior category went to Nyali Golf and Country Club ‘s Andrew Wahome who garnered 32 points. Kinyanjui started his golfing career at Njoro Country Club in Nakuru County in February 2018.
Other golfers who took part include Johnstone Muriuki and Qamar Naqvi who clinched 22 and 21 points in the first nine and second nine-category respectively. Longest drive went to Charles Rob while Duncan Ndegwa was the nearest to the pin position.
KPC corporate and communications officer, Kasujaa Onyonyi brought together over 80 golfers from all over the country. He said the activity was part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
“This is part of our corporate social responsibility which forms part of our five thematic areas like sports and youth which form part of our main interests and that is why we have sponsored this golf event. We do these in appreciation in the role of sports in the development of the nation,” said Onyonyi.
