Kenya marks 100 days to World U20
With 100 days left to the start of the World Athletics Under-20 Championships to be held in Nairobi between August 17 and 22, tournament chief executive Mike Rabar is confident Kenya will pull off an event to remember.
Yesterday, Rabar gave a thumbs up to his team members who have been working around the clock, almost two years after coming to office.
“I want to reaffirm we are very prepared for the event technically, logistically and from a safety perspective. We are ready to host the event based on the current prevailing Covid environment,” Rabar said at Kasarani.
He added that the Local Organising Committee has been working very closely with World Athletics in Monaco and all the directorates from transport, accommodation, technical, medical, volunteers and security have all been working in tandem with the laid down guidelines and they have been able to meet all the prescribed conditions to host a successful event.
Meanwhile, regional teams have commenced pre-trials for the global event.
Athletics Kenya is aiming to select the best athletes to represent the country.
At the weekend, the Southern region led by senior vice president Paul Mutwii held their trials at Machakos Boys High School to identify athletes who will represent them at the main trials set for July 2-3.
During the event, Mutwii disclosed that 160 youngsters drawn from Machakos, Makueni and Kitui counties participated in the pre-trials.
“The selection team has picked those who have passed the test for specialised training either in camps or schools ahead of the national trials.
We shall second coaches to the selected camps in the region and schools where some of the athletes will be based for training,” said Mutwii.
AK youth committee chairman Barnaba Korir said the Machako
s event signaled the start of pre-trials in different parts of the country.
Korir urged the junior athletes to keep polishing their skills with the aim of representing Kenya.
“We shall be striving to retain our world junior title. Each region will hold trials before and later the athletes will congregate at the national trials where we expect to select a very strong team for the global event,” he said.
