Inside the draft proposals of power division in the ODM-Jubilee coalition
Coalition talks between President Uhuru's Jubilee party and Raila Odinga's ODM party have entered an advanced stage ahead of the 2022 presidential contest.
According to reports by a local daily, a team that constituted members of both parties, presented the handshake partners with their joint proposals that highlighted among others, the framework of power division in the event of a coalition agreement.
"A draft agreement, framework agreement has been finalized and it had been taken upstairs to the party leaders of Jubilee and ODM. The ball is actually in their court to determine whether they want some changes in that framework and when we can actually sign it," a high-ranking member of the Jubilee party told the local daily.
Sources privy to the meeting, revealed to the publication that the team proposed Raila Odinga as the coalition's presidential candidate. The team tasked Jubilee party with nominating a suitable running mate for the former prime minister.
The source further revealed that the deal encompasses the presidency and power sharing, with the coalition's constituent parties given the liberty to independently field candidates in other positions.
The team has also proposed that the former premier is expected to compensate his coalition partners with key ministries once the alliance forms government. The source further reveals that there is a push to have the veteran politician commit to only serving one term and giving way for younger blood.
Raila's spokesman Dennis Onyango, while speaking to the publication, revealed that the agreement left room for other political players who are keen at crafting a political alliance with his boss ahead of the 2022 contest.
His assertion was in reference to the ongoing attempts by President Uhuru Kenyatta to unite ODM leader Raila Odinga and his erstwhile NASA co-principals. The leaders have since formed their own outfit, One Kenya Alliance, and have vowed to front a candidate in the upcoming polls.
