Several miners are missing after being buried alive as they prospected for gold in Ikolomani, Kakamega County.

Ten of the victims have been rescued with over ten miners confirmed dead in the incident that has occurred at Bushiangala area.

Several others are unconscious but are still lying at the scene awaiting help to go to hospital.

Heavy rains pounding the area is complicating the rescue mission as the tragedy scene has become inaccessible.

Many of the victims are said to be from Migori and Tanzania.

Initial reports say there are over 30 miners in the shaft at the time of the incident. However, there are conflicting figures of the actual number of those who are in the shaft. We’ve managed to see five dead bodies.

Rescue mission is ongoing with locals blaming authorities for poor response.

"This tragedy happened earlier in the evening but we have been waiting for help in vain. We are just using our own means to rescue and retrieve bodies," said a local.
