Gor, Mathare win
Gor Mahia and Mathare United registered victories in Betking Premier League matches played in Nairobi and Kisumu yesterday.
Gor Mahia’s new coach Carlos Manuel Vaz Pinto guided his side to a 3-1 win over Western Stima at Moi Stadium in Kisumu.
The Portuguese trainer, who replaced Brazilian Roberto Oliviera who quit the team last year over lack of requisite papers, made minimal changes in the squad that beat Mathare United 3-1 in his first match with Gor last weekend.
Against a determined Stima, it was Gor who were quicker off the blocks.
Samuel Onyango gave them the lead in the 23rd minute after latching onto a loose ball inside the box.
Unperturbed by the setback, Stima took only seven minutes to equalise through Orachaman Villa for the two teams to go to half time tied 1-1.
Upon resumption, Gor striker Tito Okello proved a thorn in Stima’s defence and it wasn’t quite a surprise when he scored twice, in the 65th and 88th minutes for K’Ogalo to end a nightmarish spell which started with an embarrassing elimination from the CAF Champions League on an 8-1 aggregate by CR Belouizdad of Algeria.
In Kasarani, Mathare United bounced back with a 2-0 win over Zoo Kericho. Daniel Otieno and John Mwangi on target for the 2008 champions.
Meanwhile, it seems it’s too early to write off teams which have been registering indifferent performance lately in the league going by the outcome of last weekend’s results.
AFC Leopards were easily the team of the weekend after they smashed the winning run of KCB who have been leading the standings for the past three weeks.
KCB seemed to have taken it easy against Ingwe who had dropped points the previous weekend in a 1-0 loss to Wazito and were duly punished by two exquisite strikes from Elvis Rupia as Leopards settled the match, winning 2-1.
Prior to the loss, KCB had recorded six wins in as many matches but can take solace in that they still lead the standings with an advantage of a point against Tusker.
For Tusker, it was yet another fruitful weekend after they beat Kariobangi Sharks 4-2 in a six-goal thriller, a result which sees them breathe down the necks of table-topping KCB who could not safeguard their 100 percent.
Elsewhere, Vihiga United continued their a poor run by going down 1-0 to Posta Rangers in an ill-tempered match in Mumias.
The results saw Vihiga remain entrenched in the 15th position in the log with five points from eight matches as Rangers maintained their eight slot with nine points from a similar number of outings.
The upset of the weekend came in the form of Nzoia Sugar beating Sofapaka 2-1.
Since appointing Mike Mururi to replace John Baraza as coach, Sofapaka have been registering mixed results which are not good for a team that won the 2009 title.
Another successful team in the weekend was Bandari who laboured to a 4-3 victory over Kakamega Homeboyz,
Following the result, Bandari are placed in the sixth position in the chart with 12 points while Homeboyz are in the 14th after amassing five points.
