Former KHU champions Police in Mombasa for Yusuf Memorial

Former champions Kenya Police are among the eight Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) premier league clubs that will grace the inaugural Shaban Yusuf Memorial Tournament at the Mombasa Sports Club this weekend.

According to Moses Majiwa, deputy match and fixtures secretary at KHU, the league will take a break this weekend to pave way for the tourney which is being organised by Mombasa County Hockey Association in conjunction with KHU.

The late Shaban Yusuf, who passed away while playing squash at MSC in 2015, began his career at the Baobab Hockey Club. He then joined MSC after Baobab was dissolved. He was a member of the executive committee of the Coast Hockey Association between 2013 and 2015.

Former league winners Strathmore, Gladiators United States International University-Africa (USIU-Africa), Wazalendo, Greensharks and Sailors will be fighting for medals in the men’s category. 

Other teams in the men’s category include Kenya College of Accountancy, Coast Simba, JKUAT, Warriors, Kilifi HC, Mvita XI and St Charles Lwanga High School.

USIU-Africa and Amira Sailors will be the highlight in the women’s category that will also feature Mombasa West, Sikh Union Veterans, Daystar, University of Nairobi, Park road and Impala. St. John’s Girls Kaloleni, Nakuru Royals, Wolverines, MSC, UON, Daystar are the women entrants.

Majiwa says the event has received sponsorship from Daikyo Japan Motors limited who are the main sponsors, others are BetterBy LTD, Mayfair Insurance LTD, Pacis Insurance, Shiraz Yakub, Kamal Sembi, World Trade LTD, Villa Mandhari and Rioe Freight services.

“We sincerely thank all the sponsors to supporting hockey at the Coast of Kenya and we urge more teams to come up and compete effectively at the coast as well as in the other leagues,” said Majiwa.
