FKF presidential candidates to submit nomination papers today

Wednesday, October 23rd, 2019 03:14 |

Anxiety will be in the air when Presidential candidates’ present their nomination papers to the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Electoral Board at Kandanda House at Kasarani Stadium today ahead of the December 7 elections.

There are speculations that former Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Sam Nyamweya who had expressed interest for the same seat in FKF will not submit his papers after he went to court to contest the exercise over alleged discrepancies.

Former Vihiga Governor Moses Akaranga, who is contesting the same seat, is expected to present his papers amidst belief in several quarters that incumbent Nick Mwenda may go in unopposed.

FKF has further been thrown in a spin after sub-branches which had raised a red flag over being sidelined in the polls also sought litigation.

The development arose even as the Board chairman Professor Edwin Wamukoya officially announced yesterday that it had received nomination papers from aspirants seeking election to the National Executive Committee (NEC).

Voter verification, meanwhile, will be done between November 4, and November 9 and there after a preliminary list of eligible voters will be published on November 11, after which disputes surrounding the voter register will be heard, by the board, between November 13 and 15. The Appeals Committee, if need be, are scheduled to listed to appeals between November 18, and 20.

The final list of eligible voters will be published on November 21, 2019.

County elections have been scheduled for November 23, while the National polls have been lined up on December 7, 2019.

This comes after the board conducted a nomination exercise, last week, for aspirants seeking elective positions at the county level.

Coast region aspirant Gabriel Mghendi was among those who presented their papers.

“I would like my people from the Coast region to see me as a reliable leader who is fit for the job as their representative,” said Mghendi.

Nyanza region aspirant Joseph Andere meanwhile expressed his confidence in the Board after submitting his papers.

“The process today has been seamless and I believe the Electoral Board will conduct free and fair elections,” said Andere.

In the meantime, Western region aspirant, Bishop Tony Kweya, lauded the  seamless nomination process that saw him take very little time at the verification stations.

Aspirants from North Eastern, Upper Rift, Lower Rift and  Eastern regions as well as Woman Representative aspirants also presented their papers yesterday.

The Board will have a three-day window, between October 24 and October 26, in which disputes submitted before being heard and determined.

Aspirants who do not get recourse from the Board can further lodge their appeals to the Appeals Committee between October 28, and October 30. The final list of candidates at both the County and National level will be published on November, said the board chairman Edwin Wamukoya.

Addressing journalists yesterday, Wamukoya rubbished off claims that there were ghost clubs which had been registered to vote.

“Anyone who has such claims should bring evidence and we shall reply them in writing. We did a thorough vetting as a credible board that is neutral,” said Wamukoya.

FKF Western branch Chairman Andrew Amukowa who is contesting for NEC membership seat, decried the high nomination fees, saying they are bound to lock out most candidates.

“The fee is untenable for candidates who want to bring the necessary changes in football. Elections are meant to foster unity and not an exercise that is tailored to suit some candidates,” said Wamukoya, who just like Nyamweya, had threatened to snub the exercise of the unfavourable rules by FKF.

Voter verification, meanwhile, will be done between November 4, and November 9, 2019.

A preliminary list of eligible voters will be published on November 11, 2019, after which disputes surrounding the voter register will be heard, by the Board, between November 13, and November 15, 2019, and thereafter by the Appeals Committee, if need be, between November 18, and November 20, 2019.

The final list of eligible voters will be published on November 21, 2019.

County elections have been scheduled for November 23, while the National polls have been lined up on December 7, 2019.

“There is no other way it can be done. However, members of this board are people of integrity and we will be fully guided by the FKF, CAF and Fifa constitution in doing our work,” he said.
