Majengo-based Fanabache FC were made to struggle before edging out Team Blue from California on post-match penalties after a barren draw to clinch the inaugural Kamukunji/California ward seven-aside youth tournament staged at the Desert Grounds in Nairobi’s California Estate yesterday.

The one-day tournament, whose theme is ‘Nurturing Talents Na Vijana Kusare Madree (nurturing talents with youth to avoid drugs) was sponsored by area soccer administrator Abdirahman ‘Abdul” Adan, who donated trophies and balls to each of the 10 participating teams.

Abdul lauded the participating teams for showing discipline and brilliant display in the tournament.

He lauded the event’s coordinator coach Idris Ndikumana for organising the event which brought together untapped youth talents that kept spectators on the edge of their seats.

He promised to come up with a bigger tournament in two months that will involve other surrounding wards in Kamukunji constituency.

The tournament’s patron Joseph Kareithi said it was geared towards encouraging the youth to take up sports as a hobby and keep them off social vices including drug abuse and militia groups.

In the junior category, Young Achievers from Pumwani emerged the winners after edging California-based Volcano 5-4 on post match penalties after a barren draw in regulation time. Majority of semi-final matches ended in post-match penalties.
