Chepng’etich all set for Delhi
Reigning World marathon champion Ruth Chepng’etich will be chasing Airtel Delhi Half Marathon title on November 29.
Chepng’etich has established herself as one of the world’s best marathon runners with two outstanding victories. Early last year she won the Dubai Marathon with a record-breaking time of 2:17:07 seconds, ending the dominance of Ethiopian athletes.Chepng’etich finished before Ethiopians Worknesh Debele and Worknesh Gurmesa, the second and third in times 2:17:40 and 2:21:00 respectively.
The record time makes her the third fastest woman in the history of the marathon after Briton Paula Radcliffe (2:15:25) and Kenya’s Mary Keitany (2:17:01).She received a cash reward of $100,000 (Sh10 million) for her achievement.
What is more is that Chepng’etich will be remembered as the first Kenyan woman to win the race since 2006 when it was won by Delilah Asiago.
Chepng’etich won the world marathon title in Doha last year, clocking a PBs of 1:05:30 for the half marathon and 2:17:08 for the marathon earlier in the season. More recently, she finished third at the London Marathon in 2:22:05.
“I have been training well in Addis Ababa for the last couple of months and I am very thankful to have the opportunity.
I hold individual training once a day either in the mornings, midday or evenings. Due to the government’s directive, I can’t train alongside my pacemakers at the moment. It is difficult but it is necessary,’’ Chepng’etich told People Sport.
