Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has termed the 2020 academic year lost to Covid-19 pandemic for high and primary schools.

CS Magoha said on Tuesday the pandemic has wasted the year seeing the earlier plan to reopen the schools in September was dismissed over rising coronavirus cases.

"We have therefore lost the 2020 academic year as lost because learning was disrupted by the pandemic," he said.

Speaking at Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development(KICD) headquarters alongside other stakeholders, the CS gave the full education guidelines as directed by President Kenyatta on Monday.

For the Kcse and the Kcpe candidates who were set to sit their exam this year, the CS said they will have to sit the exam in 2021.

The loss of 2020 academic year will mean a double form 1 class in 2021, he added.

The CS, however, allowed teachers and parents to teach their students at the estates but do so only with strict observance of the guidelines by the Health Ministry to keep off coronavirus.
