SHIV SIMANI How was your reign as MrUnited States International University 2010? Wow! This is something I don’t talk about much because I guess I never really understood what exactly it meant to hold the title. It felt more like a beauty pageant at the time that I thought was fun to take place in, since I was into modelling and figured it would give me some exposure that I needed. How did your fitness journey start? Well, I have always been into fitness; from football to swimming and track running. I actually had a dream of becoming a professional football player, but that didn’t happen. I managed to keep playing all sort of sports, especially local football, but I never felt like I found my place. It’s not until I cleared university that I found fitness. It came at a time in my life when I was battling peer pressure and all that comes with it. So, I drowned myself in the gym. How far have you come with health and fitness? I have come from working out at my backyard, to a gym at Lang’ata Women’s Prison to a small apartment gym to now being a CrossFit Level One trainer with my own website. CrossFit a lifestyle of safe, effective exercise and sound nutrition. I offer online coaching, customised meal plans, customised workout plans and a fitness and nutrition on my blog: www.shivsimani.com. I am proud of my achievements and I really appreciate all those who have supported me through the journey. You had a company called JustGymIt with Frankie ‘Justgymit’ Kiarie. Why did you go separate ways? We realised we had different visions for the company and thought it would be better to follow different paths. I have never regretted the decision. Can you stress the importance of health and fitness, especially with today’s lifestyle? I can’t stress this enough! I strongly believe that everyone should create space for fitness in their day-to-day lives. Everyone has the time, just not the will. I’ve made it my life mission to educate, motivate and provide the material for everyone and anyone to see the need to join the healthy and fit lifestyle. How hard is it balancing time between yourself, family, fitness and your business? It’s not easy at first, but once you learn how to get your priorities right, it’s all manageable. Yes, there’s the occasional moments when things may seem out of your control, but I have learned to adapt and plan a new route. How has becoming a dad changed your life? First of all, my girlfriend Michelle (Miss Tiramisu) and I were university sweethearts. We have been friends for over 10 years, nine of those together. Being a dad has shown me the importance of a support system, communication and patience. I would also say it has definitely motivated me to push myself harder than ever at work. What do you aim to achieve with your website? I would like to establish myself as Kenya’s top online trainer. I would also like it to be the hub of all things fitness and nutrition. There is a lot of information out there, so I intend to break it down to bite size bits. Any encouragement words for dreamers out there? Go for it. Dream big and take the steps required to achieve the dream. Plan and execute. Believe you can do it.
